Shadow the Hedgehog is known as Sonic's rival, and is the Ultimate Lifeform. He is immortal and immune to all diseases, and has a powerful body that allows him to match Sonic's speed. He is also the advisor and tactician of Avalon's Knights, and is a rather big backbone to the team with his large array of combat skills.

History
Mobius
Space Colony "ARK"
Shadow was raised on the space colony called ARK a half a century before his debut on Mobius, created to be the Ultimate Lifeform. As the Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow is immune to all diseases and is unable to age. As a successful project, his purpose was to have his "immortality" copied to his Milk sister, Maria, to cure her of her sickness called NIDS. However, he was captured by the military out of fear of the project, and lost all of his friends and family, including Maria. He was then sealed in cold storage in a prison, never meant to be shown to the world.
Revenge
This all changed 50 years later when Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik infiltrated the prison and released Shadow from his slumber. Throughout the time of containment, it seemed that Shadow has lost a good chunk of his memories, and the majority was filled with the horrors of the attack upon ARK, and the death of Maria. Lusting for vengeance, Shadow teamed up with Robotnik, and eventually recruited the government spy Rouge the Bat to collect the powerful Chaos Emeralds to power up the ARK's powerful Eclipse Cannon that could destroy a large chunk of Earth's surface.
Throughout his endeavor, Shadow eventually ran into Sonic the Hedgehog, who constantly got in his way. Shadow eventually brought the fight back to Sonic when he gained the final emerald needed to completely power up the ARK. Eventually, the final battle commenced between Sonic and Shadow upon the ARK while they both raced to the Eclipse Cannon. Neither was the victor, as Eggman gained the last emerald from one of Sonic's allies, and set to blow up Station Square.
This backfired when a failsafe activated from Gerald Robotnik, Shadow's adopted father. As a "taste of revenge", Gerald set the ARK to plummet into the Earth's Core and destroy it, thus causing the entire planet to be destroyed. Sonic, Robotnik, Rouge, and Sonic's friends set out to stop the ARK from doing so.
Shadow however, did not, as he knew this would happen. However, his mind was quickly changed when Sonic's friend, Amy Rose, talked to Shadow and caused a trigger in Shadow's memories to arise, causing Shadow to remember his purpose in the world: To allow the people of Mobius to be happy. Shadow, now knowing this, went to help Sonic stop Gerald's plans and the ARK from plummeting. Using the Chaos Emeralds, they both transformed into Super Sonic and Super Shadow, and used Chaos Control to set the ARK back into orbit. Due to inexperience with his super form, Shadow lost a large amount of energy and plummeted into Mobius' atmosphere.
Redemption
However, Shadow lived, but lost a large sum of his memories once again, but all he could remember now, is his name, and his abilities. Nothing more. During his long coma, Eggman found and captured Shadow and put him in an armory, which was eventually found by Rouge the Bat. Teaming up with her and one of Eggman's powerful robots, Omega, they set out to find Eggman. This lead to fighting Metal Sonic with the help of Sonic and his friends. Throughout this adventure however, Shadow was unable to regain his memories.
Months later, Shadow was still wandering about his past, now having regained images of Maria's death. He eventually met Black Doom, who would help him regain his memories as long as he worked for him. Shadow agreed to this and his task was to find the seven Chaos Emeralds once again. Again, Sonic and his friends assisted Shadow in regaining his memories in an attempt to break him away from Black Doom. This put Shadow on the fence with his allegiance, but after an encounter with the Shadow clones that Eggman made, and the doctor himself, he decided to stop trying to find a purpose and make one for himself.
Gaining all seven emeralds, Black Doom took the emeralds and commenced his plan to suck up the entire lifeforce on Earth. Paralyzing Sonic and company, Shadow was the only one to resist this force and take the fight to Black Doom. Throughout the losing battle, Shadow eventually learned that his blood came from Black Doom's, and therefore Black Doom is technically his father, which allows him to 'mind control' Shadow and render him useless. Shadow eventually broke through this with the help of his memories from Dr. Gerald and Maria, and he transformed into Super Shadow to take down Black Doom, which he did.
After the battle, Shadow regained the hope he had in himself, and set off to leave his former purpose behind, setting off to make his own. This lead to him occasionally helping Sonic with his battles, while doing his own line of adventures with his now closest friend Rouge, and Omega.
Avalon
During on of his solo adventures, Shadow was battling against one of Robotnik's major robots, and used Chaos Control. What he got was not what he expected. During his teleportation, he crossed with another warp that sent him into another area. Away from his battle and confused, he began his search for information. He soon learned that he was on an island called Avalon, and he was purposely sent here by a man named Oberon, who required his assistance. It also turned out that his rival, Sonic the Hedgehog, was here as well.
